Should I stay or should I go now ... If you say that you are mine I'll be here until the end of time ... So you got to let me know -- Should I stay or should I go?
Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Heavyweight Champion Cain Velasquez lost out on a big-money, high-profile mixed martial arts (MMA) match when Antonio Silva crushed Alistair Overeem with a savage third-round knockout at UFC 156 just last month (watch it here).
Instead, Velasquez drew a rematch with "Bigfoot" in the UFC 160 main event at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 25, 2013. Velasquez's loss was seemingly a gain for Junior dos Santos, who was paired up with the former Strikeforce and K-1 champion to complement the Memorial Day weekend headliner.
But, then news broke that "The Reem" was injured in training, forcing the Blackzilian off the pay-per-view (PPV) card and standing up "Cigano" for the second time in his brief Octagon tenure (more on that here).
Dos Santos, who clearly can't be thrilled with the latest familiar setback, now has to determine if he waits two months for the testosterone-depleted "Demolition Man" to recover from his injury or he pushes forward with a new opponent.
Ana Guedes, dos Santos' attorney and representative, recently spoke with Bleacher Report, revealing that her client is prepared for both scenarios; however, if the former is too extensive, the former champion is more than willing to compete as scheduled against a fresh face.
She explains:
"Junior's not looking to sit out too long.... If it's a real extensive injury or something, you don't want to wait.... We're definitely just waiting for news [on the extent of the injury]."
Early reports indicate that Overeem will be out about six weeks. That would mean he would likely be able to return to action sometime in late July/early August based roughly on the existing timeframe. However, it's important to note that no timetable for his return is known at this time.
If it is a lengthy layoff, or he and/or the promotion is simply disinterested in playing the waiting game, dos Santos made it clear through his representative that he is willing to fight anyone the promotion sees fit even if most of the "top guys are all tied up."
She continues:
"Junior's position is 'I don't choose my opponents. So if they choose for me to fight Overeem and I have to wait so be it and if they decide there's another guy I should fight, then bring it on'."
Mark Hunt -- fresh off a highlight-reel knockout of Stefan Struve last weekend in the UFC on FUEL TV 8 main event (watch that here) -- has already raised his hand to volunteer his services. He isn't Overeem, but Hunt -- also a former K-1 champion -- is now considered a "top guy" in MMA who would certainly (at least on paper) make for a fun stand up fight if booked.
However, unlike Struve, don't expect dos Santos -- a knockout artist in his own right -- to foolishly play with Samoan fire when he has a Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt at his disposal.
If the heavy-handed bout even comes to fruition, of course.
