Protesters joining a 48-hour strike drew parallels between Greece's current plight, where it faces bankruptcy unless it accedes to the demands of international lenders, and its seven years under military dictatorship.

On Syntagma Square in central Athens, songs from the struggle in the 1960s and 1970 against a junta of colonels boomed out over loudspeakers. Police said two officer were injured and three protesters arrested.

"We warn you that as legal representatives of the Greek police, we will issue arrest warrants for a series of legal violations ... such as blackmail, covert abolition or erosion of democracy and national sovereignty."

On Thursday, Papademos announced that the three parties in his coalition government had agreed to the austerity and reform package, even though they face the rage of voters in elections possibly as early as April.

However, Venizelos failed to persuade his euro zone peers to approve immediately the deal and an accompanying bond swap, which will cut the value of the debt held by Greece's private creditors by about 70 percent.

The EU and IMF have been exasperated by a series of broken promises and weeks of disagreement over the terms of the bailout, which would be Greece's second since 2010, with time running out to avoid a default.

"Until the next Eurogroup which will most likely convene on Wednesday, our country, our people should think and make a final strategic choice," he said.

"If we see the future of our country within euro zone, within Europe, we should do what we have to do for the program to be approved and for the PSI to be concluded on time before major bonds expire in March."

Resistance is growing among nervous lawmakers who must face the electorate shortly.

The socialist deputy labor minister resigned in protest on Thursday while about 35 socialist deputies called for measures to ease the effects of the new austerity.

According to Athens News Agency, socialist lawmaker Pavlos Stasinos resigned on Friday and news websites reported that another deputy was threatening to quit. However, only mass defections would sink the package in parliament.

"There will most likely be a string of defections and abstentions but I don't believe that the measures will fall short of the majority required," political analyst George Sefertzis told Reuters. "Voting for them will be painful for MPs, but assuming responsibility for a bankruptcy would be as onerous, if not more so."

In Friday's strike, ships were stuck in Piraeus port and public transport halted. Hospital doctors and bank employees also walked off the job. Flights were not affected by the strike, an airport official said.

"The measures included in the new (EU/IMF) memorandum and which the three political leaders agreed with the government and the troika are the 'tombstone' of the Greek society," the civil servants' union ADEDY said in statement. "It's time for the people to speak up."

ADEDY and its private sector sister GSEE represent about two million workers, or roughly half the country's workforce.

The two unions, which have staged repeated strikes since the country first resorted to a bailout from foreign lenders, have called for protesters to rally in front of parliament.

LONDON (Reuters) ? Christie's on Tuesday kicked off a fortnight of major London art sales with a bang, hitting or exceeding the most optimistic pre-sale expectations and extending 2011's record-breaking run into the new year.

At its impressionist and modern evening sale, the world's largest auctioneer sold works worth 97.8 million pounds ($155 million), which was toward the top end of estimates.

The Art of the Surreal auction raised an additional 37.2 million pounds ($59 million), well above the valuation range of 19.6-29.1 million pounds, although the total included buyers' premiums whereas pre-sale estimates did not.

According to preliminary figures, Christie's overall sold art worth 135.0 million pounds (slightly under $214 million), topping the high estimate of 127.1 million pounds as the London art world enters a two-week period of auctions that are off to a strong start.

British sculptor Henry Moore was the night's top lot. His "Reclining Figure: Festival" soared to 19.1 million pounds ($30.3 million) compared with pre-sale estimates of 3.5-5.5 million. Christie's said it was an auction record for the artist.

In the surreal section, Christie's also smashed the auction record for Spanish painter Joan Miro when "Painting-Poem" went for 16.8 million pounds ($26.6 million), double its estimate.

Vincent Van Gogh's "Vue de l'asile et de la Chapelle de Saint-Remy", from the collection of the late Hollywood actress Elizabeth Taylor, raised 10.1 million pounds ($16 million) versus expectations of 5.0-7.0 million.

"As the crown jewel of her art collection, we are delighted with the price achieved for Van Gogh's 'Vue de l'asile', a profoundly beautiful work from one of creative high points of the artist's career," Marc Porter, Chairman of Christie's Americas, said in a statement.

Juan Gris' "Le livre" went under the hammer for 10.3 million pounds, just short of the low estimate of 12 million.

The strong night launches Christie's into the new year on a positive note after it posted record revenues of 3.6 billion pounds in 2011, an increase of nine percent from 2010. Those figures underlined the ongoing strength of the "blue chip" art market that concentrates on top artists and rare works.

Emerging collectors from mainland China have been a driving force, and experts also believe investors are considering art as an alternative to stocks, bonds and currencies given the strength of the market in the last two years.

Rival Sotheby's holds its equivalent auction on Wednesday evening, and the two companies stage a second series of post-war and contemporary sales the following week.

Combined, the auctioneers are offering art worth in excess of 500 million pounds (roughly $800 million).

Storm blankets Nebraska after dumping on Colorado (AP)

OMAHA, Neb. ? A powerful winter storm that covered parts of Colorado with up to 6 feet of snow crept east across the Plains Saturday, knocking out electricity to thousands in Nebraska as the blanket of heavy, wet precipitation downed power lines and made travel treacherous.

Nebraska got more than a foot of snow, and forecasters predicted the storm would drop several inches Saturday in central Iowa before gradually weakening as drier air mixes in and the front continues east.

In York, Neb., Denise Smart spent her Saturday running the register at a mostly empty gas station near I-80 because few people were out in the snow.

"It was loads of fun getting here this morning at 6:30," Smart said.

While travel was difficult throughout the path of the storm, it caused the most problems in Colorado, where Interstate 70 was closed between Denver and the Kansas border until Saturday morning. More than 600 flights were canceled Friday in Denver.

All winter storm warnings expired in Colorado by Saturday afternoon, but warnings remained in place for eastern Nebraska and central and southwestern Iowa.

The National Weather Service said snowfall across the Denver area ranged from 14 to 20 inches. Nearly 4 feet covered the Pinecliffe area, while there was 18 inches near Boulder and 14 inches in the capital city itself. Several towns in eastern Colorado reported more than a foot of snow.

Ski resorts that have suffered below-normal snowfall this year welcomed the snow, but some benefited more than others. Echo Mountain near Denver received 55 inches of new snow, but the storm only dusted larger resorts in the central Colorado mountains.

The downside of all that fresh snow is greater potential for avalanches. The Colorado Avalanche Information Center reported 2 feet or more of new snow could easily overrun the weak, existing snow pack.

A band of heavy snow stalled over central Nebraska Friday, dumping more than 20 inches in rural McPherson County. A wide swath of Nebraska generally along Interstate 80 received 8 to 12 inches of snow on Saturday.

The highways in Nebraska and Iowa generally remained open during the storm except when accidents or downed power lines blocked the way, but officials urged people to stay off the roads if they didn't have to travel.

"This was an awful wet snow," said National Weather Service forecaster Dave Fobert.

Farmers in Nebraska and ranchers in drought-stressed eastern Colorado were grateful for the snow's moisture. But the high-moisture content also created problems because of the weight of the snow.

The heavy, wet snow caused tree limbs to break and knocked down power lines across Nebraska. More than 15,000 customers, mostly in southeast Nebraska, were without power around midday Saturday, but that number had shrunk to about 6,000 by Saturday evening.

Utility officials said the fresh snow initially made it difficult to make the needed repairs.

The weight of the snow also made homeowners work hard to clear their driveways.

"It's terribly heavy. It's even hard to move with a snow blower," said Faye Reiss, who lives in Minden, Neb. Reiss watched her snow-removal contractor struggle to move the snow Saturday.

LONDON ? British Prime Minister David Cameron's office says Liberal Democrat lawmaker Ed Davey has been appointed as Energy and Climate Change Secretary after his predecessor quit.

Chris Huhne resigned from his post as a Cabinet minister on Friday after prosecutors charged him over an alleged attempt to pin a speeding penalty on his ex-wife.

Huhne, who insists he is innocent, and his former spouse Vicky Pryce will appear in court later this month charged with perverting the course of justice.

Davey was previously a junior minister in the business department. Norman Lamb, also a member of the Liberal Democrat party ? the junior member in Britain's coalition government ? takes Davey's post.

LONDON (AP) ? British Prime Minister David Cameron was making a third unwanted shake up of his government Friday, after prosecutors charged Cabinet minister Chris Huhne over an alleged attempt to pin a speeding penalty on his ex-wife.

Cameron, who took office in 2010 with a vow to keep his top ministers in their posts for the long term, was finalizing a replacement for Huhne's position in charge of Britain's energy and climate change ministry.

It follows earlier unplanned reshuffles of Cameron's Cabinet, after Liberal Democrat David Laws stepped down in 2010 over an allowances row and following the dramatic departure of Defense Secretary Liam Fox, who resigned last year following a furor over a close friend who had posed as an aide.

Huhne, who will continue to serve in Parliament with the Liberal Democrat party ? the junior member in Britain's coalition government ? faces a criminal charge of perverting the course of justice, Keir Starmer, the chief prosecutor for England and Wales said.

Prosecutors said the offense carried a maximum sentence of life in jail, though those convicted typically face much more lenient punishments.

The charge follows an eight-month police investigation into an allegation that Huhne persuaded his now ex-wife, economist Vicky Pryce, to accept a speeding penalty on his behalf in 2003, to avoid a driving ban.

Starmer said that Huhne and Pryce, who were married for 26 years and had three children and two stepchildren together before they split in 2010, would both face the same charge and appear in court on Feb. 16.

"We have concluded that there is sufficient evidence to bring criminal charges against Mr. Huhne and Ms. Pryce for perverting the course of justice," Starmer said.

Huhne has consistently denied any wrongdoing over the case, which relates to a speeding offense committed as a car used by the couple traveled from Stansted Airport, near London, to Huhne's home in Clapham, south London in 2003.

"I am innocent of these charges and I intend to fight this in the courts and I am confident a jury will agree," Huhne told reporters after he was informed he had been charged.

In a letter sent to Cameron tendering his resignation, Huhne said he would "mount a robust defense against the charges" and added that he had been honored to lead Britain's work to tackle climate change.

Cameron, in his written reply, told Huhne he had "made the right decision under the circumstances" to step down.

Starmer said Huhne was accused of having "falsely informed the investigating authorities that Ms. Pryce had been the driver of the vehicle in question" in order to escape a speeding penalty.

Cameron's office did not immediately say who would replace Huhne, though he is expected to be succeeded by another member of deputy prime minister Nick Clegg's Liberal Democrat party.

In a letter to Huhne, Clegg said he hoped his colleague ? previously a rival for their party's leadership ? would eventually return to a key role in government "as soon as possible."

NKorea demands preconditions for talks with South (AP)

PYONGYANG, North Korea ? North Korea on Thursday backed away from earlier vows never to deal with rival South Korea's leader but demanded several preconditions for resuming talks, including the cancellation of U.S.-South Korean military drills.

South Korea is unlikely to accept most of the demands made in a statement by the Policy Department of the North's powerful National Defense Commission. But the timing of the statement, which follows comments Wednesday by a senior U.S. diplomat that Washington is open to diplomacy if Pyongyang improves ties with Seoul, and the change in tone after weeks of refusal to talk with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak could signal a willingness to ease tensions, analysts said.

"If clear answers are given, dialogue will resume immediately, and the inter-Korean relations that have been moving toward complete destruction will improve," Ri Son Kwon, a colonel working for the commission's Policy Department, told The Associated Press in an interview. "The resumption of dialogue and the improvement of relations hinge completely on the willingness of the South's government."

The North's defense commission issued a list of nine conditions, including demands that South Korea apologize for failing to show proper respect to Kim Jong Il during the mourning period that followed the leader's Dec. 17 death. Among the other demands were that Seoul stop criticizing Pyongyang over two deadly 2010 attacks blamed on North Korea, and follow through on previous agreements that call for South Korean investments in the North.

The North also demanded an end to U.S.-South Korean military drills, which the allies hold regularly but that Pyongyang calls a rehearsal for war. A round of military exercises are to start later this month.

South Korea has called for dialogue as new North Korean leader Kim Jong Un tries to consolidate power and extend his family dynasty into a third generation following his father Kim Jong Il's death.

But South Korea's Unification Ministry released a statement Thursday saying it regrets the North's "unreasonable claims as part of its propaganda at an important juncture for peace" and "does not feel the need to respond to these questions put forth by North Korea one by one."

Still, the North's statement is "a bit of an olive branch" when contrasted with its previous promises to ignore Seoul, said John Delury, an assistant professor at Yonsei University's Graduate School of International Studies in South Korea.

The North could be signaling that it understands a message relayed by Assistant Secretary of State Kurt Campbell, during a trip to Seoul this week, that Washington favors a diplomatic solution to a North Korean nuclear standoff, but only if Pyongyang improves ties with Seoul. Although Pyongyang has been reluctant to deal with Seoul, it has suggested a willingness to negotiate with the United States.

But "the statement is meant primarily to pull the fig leaf off the South Korean government's claims that it is open to dialogue," Delury said. "Pyongyang is trying to call Seoul's bluff by claiming South Korea is the intransigent one."

North Korea proudly trumpets its efforts to build nuclear weapons and has a history of aggression against its southern neighbor, and there has been uncertainty about whether Pyongyang will now lean toward provocation or reconciliation.

Pyongyang conducted nuclear tests in 2006 and 2009 and has developed missiles with the potential to attack its neighbors and possibly reach the United States.

North Korea has repeatedly pressed for the resumption of aid-for-nuclear disarmament talks that have been stalled since Pyongyang walked away in early 2009, but Washington and Seoul have said Pyongyang must first follow through on previous nuclear commitments.

In late December, the North's defense commission warned South Korea and the rest of the world not to expect any change from North Korea after Kim's death and said it would never deal with Lee's conservative government, which ended a no-strings-attached aid policy to the North after taking power in 2008.

Thursday's statement included some of North Korea's typically harsh rhetoric ? calling Lee a "traitor," for instance ? but it didn't repeat earlier pledges to never talk with Seoul.

"It appears North Korea is cooling off after being infuriated at South Korea during the mourning period for Kim Jong Il," said Koh Yu-hwan, a North Korea professor at Seoul's Dongguk University. "North Korea understands its relations with South Korea should improve for progress in its relations with the United States."

The Korean peninsula is still technically at war because the 1950-53 Korean War ended with an armistice, not a peace treaty.
