The Jelly Bean flavor of Android is hitting yet another phone today. (OK, this one's been available for a couple days now, but this morning AT&T made it official.) This time it's AT&T's Samsung Galaxy S2 Skyrocket that's getting Android 4.1.2, some nine months after its Ice Cream Sandwich update. This one's only available through Samsung's KIES desktop software, unfortunately, but that's a small price to pay for a big update. 

Here's what you have to look forward to:

• Google Now with enhanced voice activation
• Adds Browser bar, Drive Mode, ATT Locker, Mobile Hot Spot, Featured Apps widget as preloaded applications
• Removes Qik and MSpot applications
• Improved Call Quality

'Sustainable fishing' certification too lenient and discretionary

Apr. 10, 2013 ? The certification of seafood as "sustainable" by the nonprofit Marine Stewardship Council is too lenient and discretionary, a study by a consortium of researchers has found.

"When consumers want sustainable fish there are two options to meet the demand: fisheries can become more sustainable or the definition of sustainable can be watered down to be practically meaningless -- with MSC seafood, the definition has been repeatedly watered down," said Jennifer Jacquet, a clinical assistant professor in New York University's Environmental Studies Program and one of 11 authors of the study, which appears in the journal Biological Conservation.

The expansion of fishing in the oceans -- further offshore, deeper, and for different species -- has led to the depletion of many marine fish populations. In response, market-based efforts aimed at consumers, which include "eco-labeling," have emerged to change demand. Among these was the establishment of the London-based Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) in 1997. A joint project between World Wildlife Fund and Unilever, MSC was created as a conservation tool -- intended to provide ''the best environmental choice in seafood'' to consumers and to create positive incentives that would improve the status and management of fisheries.

However, conservation groups have raised concerns about MSC's certification process, calling into question the organization's claim that its eco-labeling program is "the best environmental choice in seafood." Its certification process is paid for by the fisheries, with rates dependent on the size and complexity of the fishery. MSC estimates that most certifications cost between $15,000 and $120,000. Since its founding, MSC has attached its certified label to more than 170 fisheries, with fishery clients spending between $2.3 and $18.7 million on certification.

To gauge the viability of MSC's labeling program, the researchers examined 19 formal objections -- raised primarily by environmental groups and amounting to one-third, by weight, of all MSC-certified seafood -- to certifications MSC has granted to fisheries for Chilean sea bass, Antarctic krill, and others. Objections are heard by an independent adjudicator appointed by MSC. In all but one of these 19 cases, the certification was upheld.

In the Biological Conservation analysis, the researchers sought to determine whether these fisheries, in fact, met the MSC's principles for certification.

The MSC uses three major principles that third-party certifiers interpret in determining whether a fishery is "sustainable" and may use the MSC label: sustainability of the target fish stock; low impacts on the ecosystem; and effective management. However, the researchers found many of these fisheries -- representing 35 percent of eco-labeled seafood -- did not meet MSC standards.

For instance, the longline fishery for swordfish in Canada appears to violate the "low impacts on the ecosystem" principle. This fishery has high levels of bycatch -- sea life accidentally caught in pursuit of other fish. The targeted catch of 20,000 swordfish per year results in bycatch of approximately 100,000 sharks as well as 1,200 endangered loggerhead and 170 critically endangered leatherback turtles.

"The MSC's narrow definition of sustainability is out of step with the general public perception of what that term means," said Claire Christian, one of the study's co-authors and a policy analyst at the Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition. "When the MSC labels a swordfish fishery that catches more sharks than swordfish 'sustainable,' it's time to re-evaluate its standards."

The Alaska pollock fishery, one of the largest fisheries in the US, also received MSC certification even though, the researchers noted, several court rulings had determined that the fishery was not in compliance with national law -- an indication that it didn't meet MSC's "effective management" principle.

The authors believe the MSC needs to enforce the principles it created for certified fisheries. Otherwise, consumers believe they are buying "the best environmental choice" in seafood, when in fact there is a very good chance they are not.

Israeli Arab sentenced for spying for Hezbollah

JERUSALEM (AP) ? An Israeli court has sentenced an Arab citizen of Israel to seven years in prison for spying for the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah.

A court document says Milad Khatib was convicted of being in contact with a foreign agent and assisting an enemy in wartime. It says he confessed to the charges against him as part of a plea bargain.

Khatib was accused of gathering intelligence on the security detail for Israel's president and on army installations. The 26-year-old is said to have been recruited by a Hezbollah operative in Denmark in 2009.

The Haifa court decision was handed down on Tuesday.

Israel and Hezbollah are bitter enemies. The two fought an inconclusive, monthlong war in 2006, which was sparked when Hezbollah captured two Israeli soldiers in a cross-border raid.

Texas college attack: 'Seek shelter now'

At least 14 people were wounded in an apparent mass stabbing at Lone Star College's CyFair campus in Cypress, Texas, on Tuesday morning.

The suspect, a white male armed with what one witness described as an X-Acto knife, was detained, police said. The suspect, believed to be 21, was enrolled at the school.

Harris County Sheriff Adrian Garcia said police received a 911 call at 11:12 a.m. local time reporting a white male "on the loose stabbing people."

The school was placed on lockdown.

"Seek shelter now," Lone Star College's Twitter feed warned Tuesday afternoon. "If away, stay away."

The incident occurred near and around the school's Health Science Center and remains an active crime scene, Garcia said.

"Buildings are still being searched," he added.

Four victims were transported by helicopter with serious injuries "consistent with laceration," a spokesman for the Harris County Sheriff's Office said. Two others were taken by ambulance to a local trauma center.

Two of those victims are in critical condition, he said. Four are in fair condition. Others victims were treated for minor injuries, and two refused treatment, Garcia said.

One witness told CNN that the stabber was hearing impaired.

An announcement was made over loudspeakers warning students to seek shelter. "This is an emergency," the announcement said, according to KHOU-TV. "Everybody stay inside of your rooms. Do not leave your rooms."

An alert issued on the school's website indicated that "another suspect may possibly be at large." But Garcia said surveillance video reviewed by police indicated there was one "and only one" suspect.

An Instagram user who said he helped apprehend the stabber posted a photo of a man face down on the ground with a backpack. He said the man had stabbed five people, including two girls in the cheek. "Everyone ran the other way ... ," he said. "Me and this kid got em." #copsaretooslow

Police would not confirm the exact weapon used, but said no firearms were found at the scene.

The campus was evacuated, Vice Chancellor Randy Key told reporters, and the college will remain closed for the remainder of the day.

In January, three people were wounded in a shooting at Lone Star College's North Harris campus near Houston. More than 90,000 students attend classes across the Lone Star College system's six campuses.

Kerry spoke after meeting Tuesday for private talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

New software identifies and stratifies risk posed by lung nodules

Apr. 8, 2013 ? A multidisciplinary team of researchers at Mayo Clinic has developed a new software tool to noninvasively characterize pulmonary adenocarcinoma, a common type of cancerous nodule in the lungs. Results from a pilot study of the computer-aided nodule assessment and risk yield (CANARY) are published in the Journal of Thoracic Oncology.

"Pulmonary adenocarcinoma is the most common type of lung cancer and early detection using traditional computed tomography (CT) scans can lead to a better prognosis," says Tobias Peikert, M.D., a Mayo Clinic pulmonologist and senior author of the study. "However, a subgroup of the detected adenocarcinomas identified by CT may grow very slowly and may be treatable with less extensive surgery."

CANARY can noninvasively stratify the risk lung adenocarcinomas pose by characterizing the nodule as aggressive or indolent with high-sensitivity, specificity and predictive values.

CANARY uses data obtained from existing high-resolution diagnostic or screening CT images of pulmonary adenocarcinomas to match each pixel of the lung nodule to one of nine unique radiological exemplars. In testing, the CANARY classification of these lesions had an excellent correlation with the microscopic analysis of the surgically removed lesions that were examined by lung pathologists, Dr. Peikert says.

Lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer-related deaths in the United States.

"Without effective screening, most lung cancer patients present with advanced stage disease, which has been associated with poor outcomes," Dr. Peikert says. "While CT lung cancer screening has been shown to improve patient survival, the initiation of a nationwide screening program would carry the risk of overtreatment of slow growing tumors and would be associated with substantial health care costs. CANARY represents a new tool to potentially address these issues."

Red Epic Dragon sensor updates start tomorrow for $8,500, watch them do it at NAB

Red has announced that Dragon sensor updates will start tomorrow for Epic-M and Epic-X owners for $8,500 and, interestingly, is letting owners (and the public) see the operation for themselves at its NAB booth. The new sensor will bring 6K resolution, 120 fps at 5K and 15+ stops of dynamic range in a slightly larger format, according to Red. Epic owners who wait until Thursday or later will be able to grab the update for $9,500, and filmmakers hoping for a new Epic-M with the Dragon instead of the Mysterium-X sensor will be able to pre-order tomorrow for $29,000 or so. Meanwhile, there's good news for those who ordered the more budget-minded Scarlet -- they'll be able to upgrade to the Epic directly or get a 6k Dragon sensor and ASICs, with pricing details coming tomorrow and pre-orders launching on Thursday. Snowboarder Chelone Miller dies at age 29

MAMMOTH LAKES, Calif. (AP) ? Snowboarder Chelone Miller, the younger brother of Olympic gold medalist Bode Miller, died Sunday in the area of Mammoth Lakes, Calif. He was 29.

The Mono County Sheriff's Office confirmed his death Monday in a statement. The cause of death is being investigated, but authorities say foul play is not suspected.

Chelone Miller, of Easton, N.H., was hoping to make the U.S. squad in snowboardcross for the 2014 Sochi Games. Nicknamed Chilly, Miller recently finished fourth at the 2013 U.S. Snowboarding Grand Prix in Canyons, Utah.

In addition to competing, Miller also did some filming with Warren Miller and other production companies.

"Chelone Miller was an aspiring elite athlete who had made great progress as a snowboardcross rider this past season. We are all deeply saddened at the news of his death and extend our condolences to the entire Miller family," U.S. Ski and Snowboard Association President Bill Marolt said in a statement on the team's website.

Bode Miller is a five-time Olympic medalist in alpine skiing. He sat out the 2012-13 World Cup season while recovering from a knee injury.

Stocks lower after posting worst week of 2013

Stocks reversed their early losses to end near session highs in thin trading Monday, but investors hesitated to jump in ahead of what is expected to be a lackluster first-quarter earnings season.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average finished in positive territory, led by Coca-Cola and Disney. Johnson & Johnson led the blue-chip laggards.

The S&P 500 and the Nasdaq also closed higher after erasing earlier losses. The CBOE Volatility Index (VIX), widely considered the best gauge of fear in the market, traded below 14.

Among key S&P sectors, consumer staples and consumer discretionary climbed, while telecoms lagged.

Aluminum producer and Dow component Alcoa is slated to post results after the closing bell, marking the unofficial start to first-quarter earnings season. Analysts polled by Thomson Reuters expect the company to post earnings of 8 cents a share on revenue of $5.88 billion. Alcoa shares ticked slightly higher.

Banking giants JPMorgan and Wells Fargo are scheduled to post earnings on Friday.

The earnings outlook for the current quarter is fairly weak, with growth expected to increase by just 1.6 percent, down from a 4.3 percent forecast in January, according to Thomson Reuters. The quarter also has seen an unusually high number of negative warnings, with 107 negative revisions for companies in the S&P 500. Compared to positive revisions, it is the worst pace in 12 years, the news agency added.

"Sometimes, earnings are a secondary trigger for markets ? it's been more news-based as we've seen recent market rallies have to do with economic indicators," said Christine Short, senior manager at S&P Capital IQ.

While S&P Capital IQ expects first-quarter 2013 earnings growth of 0.7 percent, Short noted that the final number usually ends up about 4 percent higher than initial estimates.

"So we could see this could be an earnings season of about 5 percent growth, which would be respectable," she said. "And if we do end up 4 percent higher, it should help give the markets a boost."

Stocks finished in negative territory last week, pressured by fears over North Korea and a handful of weaker-than-expected economic data including a disappointing nonfarm payrolls report, adding to jitters that the rate of economic growth could be weakening.

"Despite all of this, the market has been amazingly resilient in 2013 so it makes good sense to continue to leave the upside open just in case all of this data is wrong," wrote Randy Frederick, managing director of active trading and derivatives at Charles Schwab. "Any pullbacks should be considered to be long-term buying opportunities, but if your trading style is shorter term in nature, late second-quarter might be a better entry point than early second-quarter."

In corporate news, General Electricagreed to buy oilfield services giant Lufkin Industries for $3.38 billion in cash, or $88.50 a share. Lufkin surged nearly 40 percent following the news.

Macy's and rival J.C. Penney are due back in court in their battle over Martha Stewart home goods after a month-long mediation effort appeared to have failed.

Johnson & Johnson slid to lead the Dow laggards after JPMorgan downgraded the drugmaker to "neutral" from "overweight." However, the firm increased its price target to $83 from $77.

Avon Products ticked higher after the direct seller of cosmetic products said it willcut more than 400 jobs as part of a turnaround plan.

Traders will also be looking out for more clues over the future of quantitative easing in the coming week when the Federal Reserve releases minutes from its last meeting on Wednesday. There are also more than a half dozen appearances by Fed officials in the coming week, including Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke.

European shares ended higher, mostly shrugging off negative news flow and Friday's weak employment numbers in the U.S. Meanwhile, U.S.Treasury Secretary Jack Lew will be in Europe for economic discussions with the region's officials and leaders. Lew is scheduled to meet with members of the European Commission in Brussels on Monday and will also travel to Frankfurt where he will meet with European Central Bank President Mario Draghi.

Sony announces Long GOP 4K codec for pros, XAVC-S for consumers

If you were chomping at the bit to create content for the oncoming 4K revolution, Sony has just announced a couple of enhancements to its XAVC video format to help you on your way. Long GOP is a high-efficiency codec designed to meet the requirements of the professional market, while XAVC-S is aimed squarely at consumers with its MP4 wrapping. Of course, both codecs should play nice with Sony's series of CineAlta cameras (the PMW-F5 is pictured above), which is set to reach over 2,000 units shipped by the end of the month. Sony's not the only one making XAVC-compatible devices however; over 60 manufacturers have applied for XAVC licenses while 31 others have pledged to support it in their products. Seeing as 4K hardware is finally dipping into affordability, we can't fault Sony for getting the ball rolling, at least from the creation side of things.

Sapphires is hardly a cinematic diamond mine. But this Commitments-style mashup of music and melodrama manages to entertain without demanding too much of its audience.

Director Wayne Blair -- another veteran of the stage show -- finds his footing during the film's many musical numbers.

Despite the prosaic plot and reserved approach taken by Blair, Briggs, and Thompson, it's tough to get cynical about such a warmhearted picture that strives to tell so uplifting a story.

A movie with enough melody and camaraderie to cover up its lack of originality.

Draining most of the blood, sweat and tears from a true story, this music-minded movie capably covers a song we've heard a hundred times before.

"Sapphires," which was inspired by a true story, is propelled by a strong sense of music's power to connect people and change lives.

Fires on all cylinders when it drops all pretense and allows its talented cast to simply belt out a series of pure, unfiltered slices of ear candy.

A rousing soundtrack helps to compensate for some of the historical embellishments in this Australian crowd-pleaser.

'Sapphires' got heart and soul

It might not possess the exuberant innocent fun of 'That Thing You Do!' or the overall brilliance of 'The Commitments' but 'The Sapphires' shines enough in its own right. (Complete Content Details for Parents also available)

If you love the music of Motown and enjoy a feel good success flick, then "The Sapphires" fits the bill.

Delirious surprises crowd out the clich?s in this thoroughly disarming movie.
