Brother MFC-J625dw

The Brother MFC-J625dw ($130 street) has a good feature set for a low-priced multifunction printer (MFP). It?s geared primarily to business use but with some photo-centric features as well. It?s fast at business printing, with decent if unspectacular output quality. Though other alternatives, like the Brother MFC-J825dw ($150 street, 4 stars), offer additional features for slightly more money, the MFC-J625dw has a lot to offer a home office or micro office for its price.

The MFC-J625dw can print, copy, scan, and fax. It can fax either from a computer (PC Fax), or work as a standalone fax machine. It has media-card slots for SD and Memory Stick formats, and a port for a USB thumb drive or PictBridge-enabled camera. The 1.9-inch color touch screen with touch panel controls can be used for previewing photos as well as for navigating menus.

This MFP is compatible with the Brother iPrint&Scan app, which allows you to print or scan from an Apple, Android, or Windows 7 Phone mobile device on the same wireless network.

The MFC-J625dw, matte black with a glossy black, textured lid, is reasonably compact, measuring 7.1 by 15.9 by 14.9 inches (HWD) and weighing 19.8 pounds. Its 20-sheet automatic document feeder (ADF) lets you copy, scan, or fax multi-page documents unattended. It has a 100-sheet paper tray, a little scanty for home-office use, but it combines it with a 20-sheet tray for holding 4-by-6 photo paper.

The MFC-J625dw connects to a PC via a USB cable, or to a network via WiFi (802.11b/g/n), though it lacks an Ethernet port. I tested it over a USB connection using a computer running Windows Vista.

Brother MFC-J625dw

Print Speed

The Brother MFC-J625dw printed out the latest version of our business applications suite (timed with QualityLogic?s hardware and software) at 4.3 effective pages per minute (ppm), edging the Brother MFC-J825dw, which averaged 4.0 ppm on the same tests. The Editors? Choice Epson Stylus NX625 ($149.99 direct, 4 stars) also printed out the suite at a 4-ppm clip.

The MFC-J625dw averaged 1:59 in printing 4-by-6 photos, tying the MFC-J825dw, while the NX625 averaged only 58 seconds per print.

Output Quality

The MFC-J625?s overall output quality was a touch below par compared with inkjet MFPs in its price range. Text quality was average, while graphics and photo quality were slightly sub-par. Text quality was fine for schoolwork or general business use, but not for documents with which you want to create a good impression, such as a resume, or if you have a need for very small fonts.

With graphics, the colors seemed undersaturated, giving the output a slightly pale or faded look. Other issues included dithering (solid areas appearing as fine dot patterns) and minor banding (a regular pattern of faint stripes). The output was suitable for schoolwork or general business use and even PowerPoint handouts, though I?d be hesitant to hand them to potential clients or others who I was trying to impress through their visual appearance.

Photo quality was a tad below par for an inkjet. For the most part, they weren?t quite up to what we?d expect from drugstore prints. Some colors seemed a bit off (for example, in a couple of illustrations flesh tones and other details showed too much red). Detail was generally good in darker areas, but in some cases there was substantial loss of detail in brighter areas.

Other Issues

Two nice touches are the 2-year warranty, and a relatively low claimed running, 3.8 cents per monochrome page and 10.7 cents per color page.

The Brother MFC-J625dw is a well-equipped home-office MFP available for a modest price; it also has some photo-centric features like the ability to print from memory cards and USB thumb drives. It?s fast, and has acceptable if not spectacular output. For $20 more, the Editors? Choice Brother MFC-J825dw offers similar speed and output quality, plus additional features like a larger (3-inch) LCD, Ethernet connectivity, and the ability to print on optical disks. If those aren?t important to you, the MFC-J625dw could well be your home-office MFP of choice.

Actress Patricia Clarkson will lead the Carnival parade of the Krewe of Muses in her hometown of New Orleans.

The star of the 2010 thriller ?Shutter Island? and the 2003 drama ?Pieces of April? will step into a whimsical limelight by riding on a red fiber-optic-lit float shaped like a high-heeled shoe.

The Krewe of Muses is an all-women?s organization that parades through New Orleans on Feb. 16.

The krewe traditionally selects an honorary rider who exemplifies a muse from Greek mythology, such as dance, poetry or music. For 2012, the club said it chose Clarkson as its honorary ?EveryMuse? because she embodies the spirit of all muses.

PSA: Verizon experiencing nation-wide data outage?

That phone on Big Red having problems with data? Apparently you're not alone, as the carrier appears to be having issues again judging by the metric ton of emails we've gotten from you experiencing LTE, and in some cases CDMA, blackouts across the country. Our Galaxy Nexus in New York is chugging along with 1xRTT while a Thunderbolt in Washington DC is doing just fine with CDMA. We've just pinged Verizon and will update if we hear back.

Company moving HQ to Charlotte, 162 new jobs

CHARLOTTE, NC (WBTV) - Gov. Bev Perdue announced?Wednesday that Infinisource Holdings Inc., a nationally known benefits administrator focused on small to mid-market firms, will move its headquarters and start a new division in Charlotte.

The company plans to create 162 jobs over the next five years with a $500,000 capital investment in Mecklenburg County. The project was made possible in part by a Job Development Investment Grant, according to a news release from the Governor's Office.

?Creating jobs is my top priority, and our top-ranked business climate that we have built over the years has convinced another major company, not just to do business in North Carolina, but to call it home,? Gov. Perdue said.?

Infinisource, an August 2011 acquisition of Infinisource Holdings Inc. (an Accel-KKR portfolio company), has more than 200 employees between its offices in Ohio, Florida and its regional headquarters in Michigan.? Established in 1986, Infinisource is a leading benefits administration provider, serving more than 17,700 clients in the United States.

The company?s expansion and corporate headquarters relocation in North Carolina will enable the launch of a division dedicated to Human Capital Management SaaS technology, which will help? employers manage their payroll, HR, benefits administration, talent management, time & attendance,? and compliance from a single cloud deployed platform.

In addition, Infinisource will consolidate other business elements ? including sales, implementation, customer service, and, information technology? in Charlotte.

?We chose Charlotte not only because it is a great place to live and work, but also because it is an excellent place to find talent. The successful launch of our new Human Capital Management? division will require strong candidates, and we feel confident we can find what we need in North Carolina,? said Gary Trainor, CEO of Infinisource Holdings Inc.

While individual wages for the 162 jobs will vary by job function, the overall average for the new jobs will be $81,296 annually, plus benefits. The Mecklenburg County average is $51,584.

To help facilitate this expansion, the state Economic Investment Committee today voted to award a Job Development Investment Grant to Infinisource. JDIGs are awarded only to new and expanding businesses and industrial projects whose benefits exceed the costs to the state and which would not be undertaken in North Carolina without the grant.

Under the terms of the JDIG, the company is eligible to receive a grant equal to 55 percent of the state personal income withholding taxes derived from the creation of new jobs for each of the eight years in which the company meets annual performance targets.? Under the JDIG program there are no up-front cash grants paid to the company. If Infinisource meets the targets called for under the agreement, the JDIG could yield $1.913 million in maximum benefits for the company over the next eight years.

In addition, up to $638,000 could be added to the state?s Utility Fund for infrastructure improvements in economically distressed counties. When a JDIG is awarded in the state?s more economically prosperous counties such as Mecklenburg, 25 percent of the grant award is allocated to the Utility Fund to encourage economic development in less prosperous counties.

Other partners that assisted with this project include: the N.C. Department of Commerce, N.C. Community Colleges and the Charlotte Chamber.

Through Gov. Perdue?s JobsNOW initiative, the state continues to work aggressively to create well-paying jobs, train and retrain its workforce, and lay the foundation for a strong and sustainable economic future.

(AP) ? A babysitter and trusted neighbor has confessed that he bludgeoned a 9-year-old Indiana girl to death with a brick then dismembered her, hiding her head, hands and feet at a home where he was staying and dumping the rest of her remains nearby, police said Tuesday.

Allen County sheriff's investigators said in an affidavit that 39-year-old Michael Plumadore admits he killed Aliahna Lemmon on Thursday.

According to the affidavit, Plumadore told police that after beating Aliahna to death on the front steps of the home in the early morning hours, he stuffed her body into trash bags and hid her in the freezer at the home in a rundown trailer park in Fort Wayne. He said he later chopped up her body with a hacksaw and stuffed her remains into freezer bags.

Police said Plumadore told them he had hidden Aliahna's head, feet and hands at the trailer and discarded her other remains at a nearby business. Police obtained a warrant to search the trailer on Monday and found the body parts.

Authorities didn't say Tuesday why Plumadore killed the child, but Sheriff Ken Fries said investigators suspected Plumadore was involved since soon after she was reported missing Friday night.

Investigators questioned him Friday and Saturday and he was arrested Monday after being interviewed by detectives for several hours more.

Fries said his long police career told him that Plumadore's account of the girl's disappearance had too many inconsistencies.

"Things that were said in 29 years of doing this that just didn't make sense," Fries said during a Tuesday news conference. "We needed to get him to talk."

Fries said Plumadore was "factual" in talking with investigators, but he wouldn't describe Plumadore's demeanor.

A judge ordered Plumadore held without bail or bond at an initial hearing Tuesday, sheriff's department spokesman Cpl. Jeremy Tinkel said. He has yet to be formally charged in Aliahna's death.

Mike McAlexander, the Allen County chief deputy prosecutor, wouldn't say whether anyone else was suspected of being involved and said "nothing has been ruled out."

Paulette Hair, 45, a former manager at the trailer park who lives at a nearby trailer park, said she never would have guessed Plumadore would kill a child.

"But you don't know a person, truly," she said.

"How could you live?" asked Hair. "How could you sit in that trailer, knowing what you did, knowing what's in your household when everybody is out there in the cold and the rain praying to God that she comes home safely and you're sitting there?"

Aliahna was a student at Holland Elementary School, said Fort Wayne school district spokeswoman Krista Stockman. She did not know what grade the girl was in.

"Obviously, this is a horrendous tragedy. For the school, this is devastating. Our teachers knew her, our principal knew her, she had friends at the school. This is going to be a loss for everyone at the school," Stockman said.

Schools are currently closed for holiday break. Stockman expected extra counselors will be made available when students return Jan. 5, and the school likely will plan some sort of memorial, she said.

Aliahna and her two younger sisters were staying with Plumadore for about one week because their mother, Tarah Souders, had been sick with the flu.

Plumadore told The Journal Gazette on Sunday that Aliahna disappeared from the home Friday morning while he was sleeping after having gone to a gas station about a mile away to buy a cigar. Authorities have said the store's surveillance video shows him there about that time.

Aliahna wasn't reported missing until Friday night. Plumadore said the younger girls told him their mother had picked her up and he didn't realize until hours later that this wasn't true.

On Saturday, more than 100 emergency workers searched for Aliahna around the trailer park on the city's north side where Aliahna and Plumadore lived. FBI agents were there Monday.

A state website shows that 15 registered sex offenders live in the park that numbers about two dozen homes. Plumadore is not on Indiana's registered sex offenders list. He has a criminal record in Florida and North Carolina that includes convictions for trespassing and assault.

Aliahna's step-grandfather, David Story, told The Associated Press that Plumadore had cared for Souders' ailing father until his death from emphysema early this month and was living in that man's mobile home.

"He was a trusted family friend," Story said late Monday, saying he was surprised by the arrest.

Richard Patee, 58, whose trailer is next to where Plumadore was living, said he didn't think it was odd that Aliahna's mother had him watching the girls for an extended period.

"They had known each other for somewhere of three to four years, I know that, and he took care of their grandfather," Patee said. "I didn't see any reason to question it at all. I talked with Mike on and off for the past two-and-a-half years and he never had a cross word."

Police shoot 7 'terrorists' in China's Muslim west (AP)

BEIJING ? Police in China's restive Central Asia border area fatally shot seven members of a Muslim ethnic group in what officials say was an attempt to end a kidnapping.

Officials and state media accounts said Thursday that police opened fire after encountering resistance in trying to free two men who had been kidnapped by what officials called "a violent terrorist group."

Four others were injured and another four arrested in Wednesday night's raid outside the city of Hotan. The two hostages were freed.

The area has been plagued by tensions between China's Han Chinese majority and ethnic Uighurs, the indigenous, mainly Muslim group. Some Uighurs have embraced militant separatism, though the Chinese government has provided scant evidence of organized terrorism.

Stock futures rise on optimism after Italy auction (AP)

NEW YORK ? Wall Street is set to open higher Wednesday after two successful Italian bond auctions raised hopes that Italy will be able to roll over billions of euros of its debt this year.

Dow futures rose 0.2 percent at 12,244, while S&P 500 futures moved up 0.3 percent to 1,263.40. The Nasdaq composite rose 0.2 percent to 2,290.75.

The Bank of Italy said the average yield on its euro9 billion ($11.8 billion) six-month offering was 3.251 percent, half the 6.504 percent rate it had to pay at the equivalent auction last month. In an auction of two-year bills, the yield fell to 4.853 percent from 7.814 percent last month.

The news pushed up stock prices across Europe. The euro was flat at $1.3069.

In France, the CAC-40 rose 0.5 percent to 3,119, while Germany's DAX was up 0.1 percent at 5,893. The FTSE index of leading British shares gained 0.6 percent at 5,546.

Despite those gains, significant uncertainty remains for the countries that use the euro. The European Central Bank reported that the continent's banks parked a record euro452.00 ($590.72) billion overnight at the bank Tuesday, surpassing the previous record of euro411.80 billion set Monday.

Those figures reflect the distrust that still reigns among banks and indicates that instead of lending to one another, banks would prefer to hold money at low interest rates at the ECB. However, levels also rise and fall for technical reasons as banks adjust their liquidity requirements.

It also reflects a huge infusion of cheap three-year loans to banks from the ECB, carried out last week in an attempt to inoculate the system against the debt crisis.

In Asia, stocks fell overnight, mostly because of concerns about the broader economy.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index fell 0.2 percent to close at 8,423.62 after news that its industrial output dropped a seasonally adjusted 2.6 percent last month ? the first decline in two months.

Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index fell 0.6 percent to 18,518.67, while South Korea's Kospi lost 0.9 percent at1,825.12.

There are also concerns about a slowdown in China's economy.

The Shanghai Composite Index reversed course after early losses, rising 0.2 percent to 2,170.01. But the smaller Shenzhen Composite Index sank 0.5 percent to 849.76.

Benchmark crude oil fell 40 cents to $100.94 per barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.
